Preserving our Past: A Major Initiative to Survey Karnataka’s Ancient Manuscripts
Karnataka is a land steeped in history, with untold stories etched into fragile, ancient manuscripts hidden away in museums, temples, and private collections. Recognizing the urgent need to protect this invaluable heritage, a major new initiative has been announced.
Under the banner of the Gyan Bharatam Mission, the Karnataka Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage, in collaboration with the Department of Tourism and the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, is launching a comprehensive Survey of Manuscripts in Karnataka.
This vital project, scheduled to run from March 2026 to May 2026, aims not only to locate these priceless documents but to ensure their long-term survival and accessibility.
The initiative focuses on several core areas:
- Survey and Cataloguing: Finding and documenting existing collections.
- Technology and Digitalization: Creating high-quality digital preservation copies.
- Conservation and Capacity Building: Training experts to preserve physical manuscripts.
- Linguistics and Translation: Unlocking the knowledge held within these texts.
- Research, Publication and Outreach: Sharing these discoveries with the world.
By bringing these manuscripts out of obscurity and into the digital age, we are safeguarding Karnataka’s cultural, literary, and historical legacy for generations to come.
