Located approximately 10 km from Ramdurg, the approach to Torgal Fort traverses rugged terrain, providing an exhilarating journey. Torgal Fort is notable for its well-planned structure, featuring a massive moat that is 20 feet deep and 15 feet wide, which historically fortified the fort. Historically, Torgal Fort was ruled by nine generations of the Shindhe kings, with the last ruler, Narasojirao Shindhe, governing from 1932 until 1949. After the merger of the kingdom into the Republic of India, the descendants of the royal family continue to reside nearby, with locals addressing Sanjay Singh, the current heir, as their maharaja. The fort played a significant role during the expansion efforts of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who sent troops to Torgal to establish a foothold in the region.
