Parasgad Fort: A Historical Gem in Belgaum

Location: Parasgad Fort is nestled in the Belgaum district of Karnataka, India, approximately two kilometers south of Saundatti village. This hill fort, with roots tracing back to the 10th century, was constructed by the illustrious rulers of the Ratta dynasty.

Architectural Marvel

The fort stands on the southwestern edge of a range of hills, towering over the black soil plains below. It spans about 500 meters (1,640 ft) from north to south and 300 meters (984 ft) from east to west, featuring an irregular shape adorned with prickly pear and brushwood. The fort’s steep and rocky sides create a dramatic landscape, with a deep gorge cutting through the hill.

Historical Significance

At the summit of the fort lies a small, ruined shrine dedicated to Maruthi, a Hindu deity. The fort itself is largely uninhabited today, though remnants of old houses hint at its once-vibrant past.

A descent of several hundred steps from the fort leads to Yadravi village, passing by a natural spring and a water tank known as Ramatheertha, which measures 30 by 6 meters. Additionally, visitors can explore a cave that houses statues of various Hindu deities, including Jamadagni, Parashurama, Rama, and Sita, along with a Shivalinga accompanied by Nandi.

The village of Yadravi is referenced as “Elarame” in an inscription found near the Bharamappa temple, dated to Shaka 901 in the Hindu calendar, adding a layer of historical intrigue to the site.
