The
, also known as the Church of Saint John the Baptist, is a syncretic shrine in the village of Deshnur, near Belagavi, Karnataka. It is known for its blend of Hindu and Christian traditions and is considered an example of religious harmony.
Features and history
- Religious synthesis: The shrine was originally a Lingayat mutt but was converted into a church in 1947 by Jesuit priest Armado Alvares (later known as Sri Animananda Swamy). It contains both a Shiva lingam in the tabernacle and idols of Jesus and Mary. Mass is held in Kannada, and verses from the Bible and the writings of Basaveshwara and Purandara Dasa adorn the walls.
- Religious harmony: Despite there being no Christian inhabitants in the village, the church sees full attendance of Hindus during Sunday mass. Priests have adopted Hindu names and practices, such as wearing saffron robes and rudraksha malas.
- Founding and social work: The founding priest, Sri Animananda Swamy, established a home for destitute boys in 1950 and a co-educational Kannada-medium school in 1953.
- Contemporary information: As of 2018–2019, the Jesuit priest in charge was Menino Gonsalves, known as Sri Menino Swamy.
