Overview
Krantiveer Sangolli Rayanna, a significant figure in the resistance against British colonial rule, served as the army chief of the Kittur Kingdom under Rani Chennamma. His legacy is honored at the memorial in Nandgad, located in Belagavi district.

Historical Significance
Rayanna was born on August 15, 1798, and became renowned for his fearless leadership and guerrilla warfare tactics during the fight against the British East India Company. He played a pivotal role in the 1824 rebellion and continued to challenge British authority until his capture.

On January 26, 1831, Rayanna was executed by hanging from a banyan tree about 3 kilometers from Nandgad village. His death marked a significant moment in India’s struggle for independence.

Memorial Site
The site of his execution features a small temple built near the banyan tree, which has become a symbol of his legacy. Legend states that a close associate of Rayanna planted a banyan sapling on his grave. Unlike typical graves, Rayanna’s grave measures 8 feet long, reflecting his impressive height of over 7 feet. Today, the banyan tree stands tall, serving as a poignant reminder of his sacrifice.

An Ashoka Stambha (pillar) has been installed near the tree, further commemorating his contribution to the fight against colonialism.

Cultural Practices
A unique custom at the memorial involves women and childless couples tying small cradles to the banyan tree, wishing for a child like Sangolli Rayanna, symbolizing hope and blessings for families.

Legacy
Rayanna is celebrated as a pioneer of guerrilla warfare in India, with historians recognizing his strategic prowess that thwarted British forces in open battle. Ultimately, he was betrayed, captured, and tried by the British, leading to his execution.
